Common Weeds in the Upper Macquarie Area

Gorse

Scientific Name: Ulex europaeus

Another introduced hedge plant which is spread by seeds which are ejected from the plant by bursting pods and distributed by birds. Seed has a high viability and production is prolific. Dense gorse growth provides a harbour for rabbits and is a fire hazard. Control is by burning, provided the fire is sufficiently hot, but the most effective control is by grubbing or pulling the plants. Goats are effective to control seedlings after burning, often in conjunction with sheep. Herbicides are effective but biological control has had only limited success.
